A Collaborative Approach to Sleep Apnea Treatment
A Collaborative Approach to Sleep Apnea Treatment

Our goal is to make sleep treatment more accessible and sustainable for your patients.
Star Sleep & Wellness accepts a wide range of medical insurance plans, including Medicare and Tricare. We handle all benefit verifications and claims processing on the patient’s behalf.
We guide patients through diagnostic testing, when required, then work collaboratively to recommend the most appropriate treatment based on clinical indicators, not a generic model.
Many patients begin with CPAP, but may struggle with compliance.
We offer oral appliance therapy as a medically backed alternative for those who are CPAP-intolerant or prefer a quieter, more portable option.
Our team will determine candidacy based on airway structure, the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, and other health markers, and communicate candidly with both the patient and referring provider about the best path forward.
How to Refer a Patient
A member of our team will follow up to learn more about your patient’s needs and begin coordinating next steps once we receive your submission.
We take the time to walk patients through their options and support them at every stage, whether they’re just starting the diagnostic process or exploring therapy alternatives after CPAP.

Frequently Asked Questions From Physicians & Dentists
You want to ensure they receive the appropriate form of care while maintaining clear and concise communication so you remain part of the treatment process.
If you’re curious about what you can expect when referring patients to Star Sleep & Wellness, please review the list of common questions below.
What Is the Reason for Choosing Oral Appliance Therapy Over CPAPs?
The reason so many sleep doctors are choosing to move toward oral appliance therapy is that it offers a more flexible, portable, and user-friendly solution. Patients who are struggling with sleep apnea often become frustrated with the mask, tubing, and noisy machine when they have to wear a CPAP device. However, oral appliances deliver greater ease of use while improving sleep habits.
What Is a Mandibular Advancement Device?
A mandibular advancement device is a customized appliance to help individuals who snore. It is commonly referred to as MAD or an oral appliance. Mandibular advancement devices are worn over the upper or lower arch of teeth and gently move the jaw forward to prevent a blocked airway. Oral appliances consist of hinges and bands, which make them a more comfortable option to wear while sleeping.
Are There Different Types of Oral Appliances? If So, Are They Effective?
Yes, there are different kinds of oral appliances. Only a member of our team can determine which one is right for each person because facial structures vary. The oral appliance will produce lasting results, based on the anatomical structure and fit. Using one of these oral appliances will help individuals have the sleep they need without worrying about potential blockages throughout the night.
Are Certain People Better Qualified for Oral Appliance Therapy?
Not everyone will be considered a candidate for oral appliance therapy. However, refer a patient to our office if you discover they have one or more of the following issues:
- CPAP-intolerant
- Considered to be younger in age
- A lower BMI
- A lower apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)
- Have a retrognathia—a lower jaw that sits further back than the upper jaw
Should My Patients Expect To Pay a High Price for Sleep Disorder Treatment?
We must conduct a thorough consultation before we can craft a cost estimate. We will examine various factors to assess the severity of their sleep disorder and carry out testing to determine if they have sleep apnea.
Fortunately, out-of-pocket expenses can be kept to a minimum if a patient is in-network with one of our many medical insurance company partners. We also accept Medicare and Tricare for those who do not have private medical insurance.
Does Star Sleep & Wellness Follow a Particular Process?
Our process includes discussing medical history, genetics, current medications, and lifestyle habits when patients are referred to us. We will recommend a sleep study, if necessary, based on diagnostic imaging and compiled information. From there, we will scan a person’s upper airway to determine the appropriate type of oral appliance. When ready, we will ensure it fits correctly and comfortably and explain the timeline for follow-up appointments. These will be necessary to check on their progress.
Will Star Sleep & Wellness Remain in Communication With Me Regarding My Patient?
Yes, you can expect our team to remain in close contact with you throughout your patient’s treatment. We will provide regular updates and correspondence after their visits, so you are informed of their progress. If we determine that the patient you referred is ineligible for oral appliance therapy, we will let you know their options.
Can My Patients Expect Additional Screenings or Treatments When Visiting Star Sleep & Wellness?
We will ensure your patient sees the appropriate professional who can help if they need to undergo a sleep study or additional consultations. As always, we will follow our protocols and processes. Please contact our team if you would like to inquire about a particular treatment or share unique needs regarding a patient.
Are Boil-and-Bite Appliances Worth the Investment?
No, boil-and-bite devices cannot achieve the same results as customized oral appliances. Although designed to achieve the same goal, they are often uncomfortable to wear, wear out quickly, and lead to further health complications. At Star Sleep & Wellness, our team ensures patients receive the high-quality oral appliance they deserve—one that allows for optimal rest and easier breathing when sleeping.
Are There Any Contraindications for Oral Devices?
We must first determine that a patient has enough teeth to support an oral appliance before recommending one. This will involve examining their mouth beforehand. We may suggest they receive dental implants to ensure optimal stabilization if they do not have enough teeth to provide a foundation.
We may not immediately recommend oral appliance therapy if a person is also:
- Suffering from a temporomandibular joint disorder
- Has a sensitive or strong gag reflex
- Needs temporomandibular joint therapy to help encourage a greater range of motion for the mouth. This will eventually allow for oral appliance therapy
Should My Patient Expect Their Bite To Change?
Oral appliance therapy may change a person’s bite over time. However, our team is equipped to inform patients of ways they can reduce the potential for this type of effect. We make every effort to provide individuals with oral appliances that fit correctly and do not cause a shift in their bite. However, we provide exercises that have proven effective at keeping a person’s bite in place to be sure.
What if My Patient Grinds Their Teeth?
Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can wear down oral appliances. This is why our devices have a three-year warranty. This can be a relief for patients, especially since a person’s medical insurance will likely pay for a new one every three years.
